How to Make a Volcanic Ash Clay Mineral Face Mask - Step by Step Tutorial by Lee Strachan

Last time, we made a wonderful Facial Scrub using fresh goat milk & apricot seeds, well that is in conjunction with this Mineral Clay Volcanic Ash Face Mask we will do today. This particular Volcanic Ash Face Mask is for 'All Types of Skin'. You may alter the recipe if you are making one for a specific type of skin by replacing White Clay with your favourite clay like Green Clay.

Above photo is Sodium Bentonite Mineral Clay that can give many benefits when used topically. It is also well known as Volcanic Ash Clay used by many celebrities, to detox & beautify skin. I use it too (lol)! See below:

To read more of the many benefits of this wonderful clay using Sodium Bentonite a.k.a. Volcanic Ash Mineral Clay, check this amazing article by Susan LaVega from 'Yahoo Voices':

Let's go back to the tutorial:

What you will need:
- 30%   Volcanic Ash Clay/Sodium Bentonite Clay
- 25%   White Clay
- 20%   Distilled Water
- 12%   Floral Water or Herbal Tea or Herbal Glycerite

You may use just plain distilled water but, adding floral waters, glycerites or infusions will add to the Facial Mask's skin benefits, I use combination of dried herbs for the many benefits I would like to infuse in my Volcanic Ash Face Mask.

- 3%    Jojoba Oil or any Light Oil

Make sure to check the skin benefits you will get from the oil you will choose to use, after all that's what we're after.

- 10%   Vegetable Glycerin

Should total to 100% of your batch. In making a recipe, I always use percentage of a batch, for example, if you are making a 1,000g (1 Kg) batch of this Face Mask, you will need 300g Sodium Bentonite Clay or 30% of the batch.

Our Additives: This is optional, but for the purpose of this tutorial and because there are people who turn their craft into business, they will appreciate this:

- 0.25%   Vit E Natural Tocopherol
- 0.6%     Australian Tea Tree (Tea Tree Essential Oil)
- 1.5%     Geogard Ultra (a natural preservative, or use a preservative you trust but, make sure to read the instructions from the supplier on recommended usage)

Let's start our project!

Step 1.     Prepare all your ingredients, weigh them out and make sure you sterilized or had applied alcohol on the container you will use for this project.

Step 2.     Before starting, make sure your floral water or herbal teas are ready. I usually have this prepared a day before I make my mask.

Step 3.     Weigh out and pour on your mixing container. Mix using a hard spoon. You may use your   hands if wearing a gloves.

                Sodium Bentonite Clay (Volcanic Ash)
                White Clay

Step 4.     Weigh and pour all your liquids in the mixing container containing the clays.

Distilled Water, Herbal Teas, Vegetable Glycerin

Step 5.     If you're making a big batch like I do, using a stick blender will help break the lumps and it will create a really smooth paste. Continue stick blending until all liquids are incorporated. Then, add in your choice of oils and continue stick blending, manual stirring (alternate this technique so as not to burn your stick). Because I'm making a really big batch, I add more clays as I continue stick blending.

Step 6.     Then, add in Vit E, mix well. Add in Tea Tree, mix, and lastly pour in your preservative and mix, mix, mix. You're done when you see a smooth paste!

Step 7.     Glop on your jars, put the lid on and label as desired.

A pure volcanic ash face & body mask enhanced with organic herbs & botanicals that is tailor made to help skin healing for blemishes and inflamed skin. This face mask absorbs toxins, draws out black heads, kills acne-causing bacteria, and good for spot treatment too. Also has anti-aging benefits because it exfoliates skin and helps with cell turnover. The all natural elements & minerals in this clay will deeply clean pores and remove toxins while the added botanicals will deliver acne fighting, yet skin calming and soothing results.

Directions For Use:
Apply a thin layer to clean skin, leave for 15 minutes, then wash off with warm water and moisturize. The antibacterial properties in this face mask work to increase healing, by improving blood flow and circulation, so your skin might appear red after removing this mask– this is completely normal and the redness will disappear after 20 minutes to 1 hour.

Enjoy your face mask!
